APG TO HOST 11TH CANADIAN PULSE RESEARCH WORKSHOP IN OCTOBER WORKSHOP Alberta Pulse Growers is hos ng the 11th Canadian Pulse Research Workshop in Edmonton this fall. The Canadian Pulse Research Workshop (CPRW) is the biennial mee ng of pulse researchers and industry in Canada to promote the exchange of informa on and discuss results of pulse crop research. The upcoming event will take place at the Su on Place Hotel Oct. 23-25. "This conference allows for the sharing of cu ng-edge scien fic efforts that Canadian researchers are focusing on for the Canadian pulse industry," said APG Execu ve Director Leanne Fischbuch, who is co-hos ng the event with APG's Research Manager Dr. Jenn Walker. "It also provides the opportunity for emerging scien sts who have an interest in the pulse industry to present in front of their peers and gain experience. We are looking forward to hos ng the 2018 event in Edmonton." Building on the success of the previous mee ngs, the 11th Canadian Pulse Research Workshop will bring together pulse researchers from different disciplines within the areas of: • Pulses for Processing and Novel Uses; • Pulses for Sustainability; • Pulses for Profitability; and • Pulses for Health. APG's Debra McLennan will speak to the conference delegates about Pulses for Health. She is a Registered Die an with over two decades of experience in health care, educa on and industry. McLennan brings her passion for food and nutri on to her role as Food & Nutri on Coordinator with Alberta Pulse Growers where she enthusias cally encourages everyone to add tasty Alberta pulses to their meals every day. "I'm looking forward to APG hos ng CPRW this year and connec ng with pulse researchers," McLennan said. "We are planning an exci ng agenda of speakers, informa on and tours to showcase the great impact research has on Canada's pulse industry and beyond." Dr. Mar n Entz, Professor of Cropping Systems and Natural Systems Agriculture at the University of Manitoba, will speak about Pulses for Sustainability. He holds a PhD from the University of Saskatchewan, where he studied winter wheat drought physiology with Dr. Brian Fowler. Entz earned a Masters of Science in Hor culture and Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Manitoba. His long-term interest is incorpora ng ecological principles into modern farming systems, including conserva on agriculture, organic produc on and crop-livestock integra on. Entz is the founder and research leader of the Glenlea study, Canada's oldest organic- conven onal comparison study. Entz is commi ed to farmer-directed research approaches and has conducted farmer par cipatory work in Central America, Zimbabwe and East Africa. Much of this work involves pulse crops grown as intercrops with maize. He leads a na onal Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada funded "Farmer par cipatory plant breeding" project that tests the role of farmer-breeders in gene c improvement of wheat, oat and potato. He teaches Produc on and Agroecology courses to diploma, degree and graduate students. Gordon Bacon, Chief Execu ve Officer of the Canadian Special Crops Associa on (CSCA) and Pulse Canada, will address Pulses for Profitability. Both organiza ons are not-for-profit na onal associa ons and share broad objec ves of increasing the compe veness of the Canadian farmers, processors and exporters, and increasing the u liza on of pulses and special crops. Before joining Pulse Canada in 1997, and taking on the responsibili es of CSCA CEO in 2006, Bacon was Director of Market Development at the Canadian Wheat Board. He served as Senior Policy Advisor to the Minister of State, Grains and Oilseeds, in O awa and held various posi ons working in the field of farmer educa on including five years with Alberta Agriculture. Bacon graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture from the University of Saskatchewan in 1981 and has a farm background. At press me, a speaker for Pulses for Processing and Novel Uses was not yet confirmed. The 10th CPRW was held in Winnipeg in 2016, which was Interna onal Year of Pulses.
