Alberta Pulse Growers' Plot to Field ini a ve is a five-year program focused on moving small plot research toward applicability to an individual farm. The 2018 field season will be the second year of field research. With a team of three agronomists and nine coopera ng producers assembled in 2016, Alberta Pulse Growers (APG) had a successful plan ng season in 2017. As expected by the fall of 2017 a er data collec on was complete, APG staff and the Plot to Field team worked together to develop more research ques ons. In the 2018 field season, APG was able to bring on addi onal team members, one new cooperator and an addi onal site in the Peace River region. With this, APG now has Plot to Field sites across the province covering different agro-clima c, soil zones and growing condi ons. As per the closest town to the sites, the following areas had 2018 Plot to Field sites: Fort Vermilion, Stony Plain, Vermilion, Linden, Trochu, Midway, Mossleigh, Lomond and Claresholm. In January, APG staff, agronomists and producers met to discuss the program's progress. The review with the group revealed a lot of confidence in the protocol that the team had built. "It was extremely important for APG to ensure that our producers par cipated in analyzing the 2017 year and providing feedback to the ini a ve," said APG Research Officer Dr. Jagroop Gill Kahlon. "Their feedback from 2017 was important to lay down founda ons for some key communica on aspects of the Plot to Field ini a ve for the 2018 field season." This provided the opportunity to add research layers to the exis ng field trials. APG was approached by Dr. Meghan Vankosky, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Field Crop Entomology Research Scien st, to par cipate in the program by layering the effects of insec cide treatment on pea leaf weevil popula ons during the pea growing season in a farm-scale setup. Together, the team framed a unique partnership whereby small plot work on pea leaf weevil could be augmented by adding data collec on and a single treatment to the exis ng seeding rate work.
