Joey grew up in north Edmonton just walking distance from the old Edmonton International Speedway. As early as 12 years old, his nights and weekends were spent watching racing competitions and specifically the drag racing. In the early and mid 70s he watched almost every major drag racer compete in Edmonton. Joey hoped that some day he would know the feeling of driving one of these funny cars. Team Ace would like to pay tribute to the origins of hot rodding and all those who took an old roadster and made it their own for the purpose of speed. Joey started his company Joey's Place in 1978 and from the beginning he catered to car enthusiasts who wanted quality workmanship. The main focus of his shop was the restoration of collector cars and specialty/ custom paint work. In 1990 Joey had his first race car built for him which he painted. Unfortunately due to a lack of funding, the car was sold before it was ever completed. Throughout the 90s Joey's Place became involved with many race cars, painting many of them. This involvement got Joey back to the racetrack now just south of Edmonton. As he now knew a number of the car owners personally, Joey considered becoming more than a spectator but his dream of racing a funny car was still a huge step away. In December of 2000 Joey made the big jump and purchased an alcohol funny car from America. At the time this was one of the better cars with a 1969 Corvette replica body on it. Joey would compete in a nostalgia class running 7.50 seconds in the quarter mile. He rebuilt the drive train and painted the body. From day one the car was yellow with purple flames. The 2001 season began and the car and driver were competitive from the start thanks to the guidance from many friends. In 2004 a new funny car was purchased and it was the latest in chassis, parts and safety equipment. The old and now well known Corvette body was kept and updated with a candy apple paint job but still retained its signature yellow body and purple flames.
