Cory Doran is probably still pinching himself. "This is unbelievable," he says, fully shocked. "Just awesome. I still can't believe it. My girlfriend can't believe it. I'm glad I've got a garage…" he trails off. Yep, a garage that now holds a 1948 custom-built Orange Krate, compliments of the 2013 Atlantic Nationals. Way back in 1994, the Greater Moncton Street Rod Association in Moncton, New Brunswick, hosted the Canadian Street Rod Nationals that year for the first time with roaring success. In 2001, it was decided to consolidate their annual Fun Run with the festival-like spirit of the Nationals, and the Atlantic Nationals was born. The prizes started out fairly humble, but quickly grew to major parts and components for builds, and now it is one of the largest prize pools in North America for single-event car shows. The grand prize is, and always has been, a vehicle. In 2010, the Atlantic Nationals gave away their first turnkey vehicle—a fiberglass body car with a chassis. It ran (like a champ), but because it was an accumulation of parts, there was no VIN and therefore it was not quite street-legal. This year, Atlantic Nationals Chairman Bill Dougherty upped his game and sourced a '48 Ford Tudor for the prize build. Having been owned by a street rodder, the Ford was already a great ride. With many generous sponsors and donations, Bill and his team were able to outfit it with a new crate engine, rolling chassis, and loads of other goodies—turning it into the infamous Orange Krate design.
