The 1948 Anglia was the first year it was available in North America, as an import. "The only difference between the UK version and the North America, with the excep on of the le hand drive, was the grill," according to Dennis. "This one has a split grill and the UK model has a three part grill." When they got started on their rebuild, the car had sagging doors and lots of paint chips. "At first, we were just fixing those small things and then it got carried away." The main body has not been modified; it is s ll all original steel. But in order to incorporate the new Mustang II front clip and wider rear end, they dropped in new fibreglass rear fenders and increased the front by 2". The hood was also built up, to accommodate the blower. The car is made for the track and has the wheelie bars to show it. But, as Dennis says, "We don't take it to the track; it's more of a show car. If you take it to the track, things are going to break. And we are not looking at spending too much more on it right now." They have their fun on the street. Many people are not quite sure what it is, when they pull up to the lights. "Most car people will recognize it, but the general public generally don't. A lot think it is a kit car." Dennis did some of the mechanical, but had a lot of the work done by local shops, in the Edmonton area. A lot of work went into the paint. "Originally, I was thinking of flames, but Debbie wasn't crazy about that idea and Cougar Paint suggested the chevrons. It turned out great, we think." They like to get it out on the road, but with Dennis' bad back and the car's short wheel base, they tend to keep the trips on the shorter side. "It's a 90" wheel base, so if you step on it, you be er be holding on. Because of the suspension, it is a s ff ride, but overall, it's a lot of fun to drive." They love ge ng it out to the summer shows around the area. When asked if they plan on keeping the '48, Dennis is quick to say, "Everything is for sale at the right price. We have had a lot of fun with it. If the right person came along, we would let it go and then look for the next oddball." 4 1
