When he was seven years old, Rick McEwan, from
Surrey BC, received a '49 Ford coupe model for
Christmas and that started his model building career.
"I've been building them ever since." And it didn't
take him long to start altering them. "It was the '60's
and hot rods were a big thing; I started changing the
models up." It would be a few years before he really
started to turn his models into art. A friend of Rick's
bought a model at a garage sale and gave it to Rick,
but it was in pre y rough shape. "I didn't know what
to do with it at the me and stuck it in the closet." It
would sit there for a few years, un l "finally, I looked
at it and said, why don't I make it into a wreck."
That first wreck, built four years ago, was the
start of something special. He worked on that
first model over three days, pu ng in about 8
hrs a day. "I don't like keeping track of the hours
I put into them, as it might scare me off," laughs
Rick. Rick got his inspira on for his style when
he was a young boy and his family used to go up
to Kamloops. "It's like a desert up there and in a
farmer's field, there was a Model A 2-door sedan.
That car was all in pieces and I would mess around,
placing the pieces where I thought they should go."
Rick thinks he has done about 50 art pieces of
his junk yard models "I get a lot of requests for
birthdays and at Christmas." A lot of them are
customs, where someone will ask Rick to build
them a certain make and model that means
