16 Alberta Pulse Growers' representa ves were on hand to witness the excitement for the pulse industry as the Canadian Special Crops Associa on joined forces for the first me ever with the Global Pulse Confedera on to host a joint conven on. More than 1,230 guests from 48 countries joined the CSCA and GPC in Vancouver July 10-13 for the largest global pulse industry event in history, Pulses 2017: The Future of Food. "The CSCA conven on is Canada's premier event for pulses, and when combined with the GPC's conference, which is the world's biggest pulse conference, you know you're going to have a great event," said APG Chair D'Arcy Hilgartner, who a ended the CSCA event for a fourth year and GPC for a second me. "There was a fantas c turnout, and with that overlapping of conferences, you are able to a ract great speakers. It was encouraging to see the industry carrying forward the momentum of Interna onal Year of Pulses 2016 with numerous ini a ves in Canada, North America and the world to promote the great benefits of pulses for health, sustainability and producers' economic viability." A er an opening ceremony that featured award-winning hoop dancer Alex Wells and opening remarks by Minister for Agriculture and Agri- Food Canada Lawrence MacAulay, the conference program began with PULSES 2017: THE FUTURE OF FOOD CONVENTION VANCOUVER JULY 10-13 Con nued on Page 18 a Global Economic Update from Farm Credit Canada's JP Gervais. Delegates then learned about the role of the food industry, consumers and governments in increasing demand for pulses from speakers Richard Black (Quadrant D Consul ng), Tim McGreevy (USA Dry Pea and Len l Council), Daria Lukie (Pulse Canada), Erika Simms (Maxwell PR) and Chris Marinangeli (Pulse Canada). The first day of Pulses 2017 also featured a panel discussion on the new GPC Pulses Contract #1 led by GPC President Huseyin Arslan and Contract Commi ee Co-Chair Andrew Jacobs, with comments from GAFTA Director General Jaine Chisholm Caunt, General Counsel Jonathan Waters and Head of Policy June Arnold. The day concluded with a symposium on pulse ingredient processing hosted by Buhler Inc. "I quite enjoyed the presenta on by Richard Black tled 'Beyond Yield and Price: Why Understanding the Perspec ves of Others is the Key to Success'," noted APG Past Chair Allison Ammeter. "He talked about how food is THE most personal of all consumer products, and the great message pulses have for consumers. In fact, 'be er-for-you' items drove a dispropor onate share of the five- year sales growth in foods, with those companies demonstra ng superior opera ng profits. He stressed that our message to consumers needs to be on point, healthy, and sustainable.
