22 Alberta Pulse Growers encourages the pulse industry to par cipate in discussions on value crea on and kicked off the process with a workshop in May. "We are aware that other segments of the cropping sector are also looking at this ques on, including the cereals industry, which has held mee ngs across Canada about how they will approach the value crea on ques on," said APG Execu ve Director Leanne Fischbuch. "For the pulse industry, APG feels it is important to have our own perspec ve on this and we would like to provide leadership in addressing the issue for our sector." VALUE CREATION These include enhanced produc on efficiencies (higher yield, drought tolerance and disease resistance) and improved func onality (higher/ lower nutrient components, enhanced processing characteris cs, improved taste). Canada's pulse industry is exploring ways in which it can establish an appropriate means or system of value crea on that will encourage breeders to develop new and relevant pulse varie es so that the pulse producers can remain compe ve in a rapidly evolving global market place. To that end, APG held a workshop on May 30 and invited fellow provincial pulse organiza ons and other key members of the pulse value chain to discuss value crea on. Presenta ons included Pulse Canada CEO Gordon Bacon who provided the strategic outlook for the industry for the next five years; an important piece of knowledge for the pulse value chain that provided the base for further discussions. Canada has a significant posi on in the global pulse trade and to maintain and grow Canada's role as a leading player in the world of pulse produc on and export, the pulse industry must con nually invest in value crea on in order to meet the evolving needs of its clients, both domes cally and interna onally. Value crea on is aimed specifically at the development of pulse varie es that introduce new and/or novel traits that bring greater value to one or more members along the value chain.
