18 plan. He told us that farmers are the credible ones to talk to consumers, not the food companies. We have a larger role in this than we think, and need to step up." During the remaining two days of Pulses 2017, delegates heard the latest global supply and demand outlooks for various pulse crops through nine panel discussions led by market analysts Marlene Boersch (Mercan le Consul ng), Chuck Penner (Le Field Commodity Research) and Randy Fairman (Fairman Interna onal Business Consul ng). Addi onal presenta ons came from Hon. Brad Wall, Premier of Saskatchewan, who received the GPC President's Award, and from the GPC Young Professionals. A GPC award for Outstanding Contribu on to the Pulse Industry was also presented to Andrew Jacobs of AGT Poortman. The program included a session on red len l grading presented by the Pulse Industry Roundtable (PIRT) because the 2016 crop year had some challenges for Canadian len l quality in the eyes of world importers. "The chance to work through a session to be er understand the Canadian grading system was an opportunity to directly show global buyers how the crop is given its specific grades," said APG Execu ve Director Leanne Fischbuch, adding that PIRT is leading the work and is undertaking a study to look again at the system and be er understand bleaching, wrinkling and coppering of len ls. "At the session with the trade, coppering was iden fied as a key issue of concern. From the par cipants who were also millers, the coppering affects the milling efficiency and creates challenges when the len l is split causing chipping to occur and loss of the smooth lens shape. CSCA members will have opportuni es to provide comments on the grading, as will producers. This issue is also being discussed at the Pulse Sub-Commi ee at the Canadian Grain Commission." Throughout the conference, delegates networked with industry colleagues at the Welcome Recep on and Closing Gala Recep on, visited the Pulses 2017 trade show and a ended the CSCA AGM and GPC General Assembly. "Pulses are a global industry - Seeing and hearing what our importers are saying about price, quality, demand and produc on is invaluable for realizing how we con nue to be profitable exporters," said APG Vice Chair Caroline Sekulic. "If we don't watch, grow, change and innovate we could easily lose our posi on as the world's top pulse exporter. Socializing with directors and staff from other pulse groups and growers from across Canada feels like we are part of a very func onal na onal team, and it's important to know that we have a collec ve goal. The mood was very posi ve and pulses have become an exci ng commodity." Trait Stewardship Responsibilities Notice to Farmers Monsanto Company is a member of Excellence Through Stewardship ® (ETS).
