Welcome to the Alberta Pulse Growers 2017 Research Report When we say more, that means additional acres, a higher volume of production and a greater economic return for Alberta's 6,000 pulse growers. Everything the organization does serves this mandate. Research plays a key role. Each year, APG – along with a variety of funding partners – invests in research projects that will ultimately advance our mandate. In 2017, we currently have 44 active projects. APG's financial commitment to these projects is $8.9 million. When the support of our funding partners is factored in, the total value of these research projects is more than $21 million. In many cases, APG's Research Committee identifies issues that need to be studied. In others, scientists approach APG and our funding partners with ideas they have that can bring value to pulse growers and processors, today and tomorrow. Before projects are funded, researchers' proposals are subject to a rigorous review process that addresses the rationale for the work, its value to growers and industry and the quality of the researcher's project design. Once projects are approved, APG works closely with researchers throughout the project's life span to ensure its objectives are being met. This report includes details about the majority of the APG research projects that took place this past year. All current projects, as well as a growing library of completed research projects, are featured on the APG website. In this report, we present stories on 32 different research projects that are being funded, or were funded, by APG and our funding partners. These projects span five categories. GROW GENETICS Developing new and better varieties of peas, lentils, dry beans, faba beans and other Alberta pulse crops. GROW YIELD Investigating and solving key agronomic issues identified by growers: Disease management, insect management, herbicide use and fertilization. GROW SUSTAINABILITY Taking a long-term view to pulse production and addressing issues such as weed populations and crop rotations. GROW UTILIZATION Developing new and better ways to process pulses and pulse fractions, so that new products can be created that will increase demand for Alberta-grown pulses. GROW HEALTH Strengthening the connection between pulse consumption and positive health outcomes, thus boosting pulse sales and contributing to a healthier society. We invite you to review these 32 stories about current and completed pulse-related research projects. Together, we can achieve APG's mandate today and in the years to come. The mandate of the Alberta Pulse Growers is to help sell more pulses. INTRODUCTION Pulse Research Report | 2
