NEW PEA PLANT PRODUCER COMPLIANCE WITH SUSTAINABILITY STANDARDS WILL INCREASE FOOD SAFETY New Leaf Essen als plant at Innisfail. Compliance with sustainability standards isn't currently a requirement for pulse growers supplying New Leaf Essen als in Innisfail, but the company's General Manager says adhering to these best prac ces will boost food safety. "This is the pet food ingredient facility," said Trevlyn Armstrong, General Manager of New Leaf Essen als, a division of W.A. Grain & Pulse Solu ons. "Pet food requirements are higher than for human food because toddlers can get into the bowl when the pet food is on the floor. No pet food company is going to take the risk with food safety and harm a child, so they take their food safety very, very seriously." Armstrong previously worked for another pet food company and found its food safety program to be more stringent than the human food plant he had been employed by because items like French fries are cooked again a er purchase so there's another kill step with the customer, but pet food is ready to eat from the bag. "If farmers start signing on to a global sustainable sourcing ini a ve then that's a good story to tell big companies that X number of our growers belong to this program," 1 8
