WHAT IS THE FEED PEA BENCHMARK?
The feed pea benchmark is intended to be used as a pricing reference. This benchmark provides a consistent and
unbiased es mate of the feeding value of peas in the three regions shown. Feed peas will trade at various differen als
to the benchmark based on local supply/demand, quality differences and other contract terms.
HOW IS IT CALCULATED?
The feed pea benchmark is an es mate of the feeding value of dry peas in Western Canada, based on the value of
compe ng feed ingredients in swine ra ons. Bi-weekly, tradable prices for the major feed ingredients are collected
for the three regions shown above. These prices are then entered into a least cost feed formula on that is typical
for grower-finisher swine in Western Canada. A feeding value is then derived for feed peas based on their nutri onal
characteris cs and the prices of the compe ng feed ingredients. In addi on to the feed ingredients shown above,
the feed formula on also includes canola oil, synthe c lysine, synthe c methionine, synthe c threonine, synthe c
tryptophan, monocalcium phosphate, limestone, salt, vitamins and minerals.
This third-party, online tool provides a transparent,
unbiased pricing reference not only for the pulse,
but also the feed, and livestock industries.
