Pulse Canada Staff On February 5, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Lawrence MacAulay met with representa ves of the Canadian pulse industry to discuss ongoing market access challenges with Canada's biggest pulse trading partner, India. At the mee ng, MacAulay also announced $575,000 in federal funding for Pulse Canada. This announcement is the result of applica ons that Pulse Canada submi ed in late 2016 and early 2018 to access funds remaining in federal Growing Forward 2 (GF2) programs, which wrap up on March 31, 2018. The surplus funding awarded to Pulse Canada will be used to inves gate and expand on new market opportuni es for Canadian pulses, including the Chinese food processing industry and the North American foodservice industry. Inves ga ng Opportuni es for Pulses in China Pulses can help food companies meet consumer demands for healthy, environmentally sustainable foods. Pulse Canada has been working with the food industry for more than a decade to increase the u liza on of pulse ingredients in processed food products such as snack foods, pasta and baked goods. Recently, the organiza on has increased its focus on the Chinese food industry. The global demand for protein has led to the expansion of China's pea processing market. Canadian pulses offer Chinese processors advantages including quality and consistency, and China has grown to become one of Canada's largest markets for peas. Chinese imports of Canadian peas have increased by roughly 400% over the past decade. Pulse Canada will use the addi onal GF2 funding to develop market intelligence on the current u liza on of pulse ingredients in the food industry and to iden fy opportuni es to expand pulse ingredient use in various food products. Research will also be conducted on Chinese consumer needs and behaviours with respect to food choices as well as current percep ons of pulses. This research will help determine how food companies can best communicate the benefits of pulses to Chinese consumers.
