Ga ra g e | sh o t s Gary gives us a little town history how after the war Hillsborough was a busy place as it was home to the Canadian Gypsum Co., which produced plaster and drywall for the building trade. "The garage benefited from all the activity going on. Nathan and Gordon (the original Steeves who opened the garage) purchased matching Oldsmobiles, which was quite an accomplishment for the time." The garage operated as a White Rose Station which was a brand under Canadian Oil Companies Ltd. until Shell bought them out in 1975. Today, the village's economy is primarily based on tourism, although forest products, agriculture and the service industry contribute significantly. Hillsborough is also proud to serve as the Eastern Gateway to the Fundy Tidal Zone where the world's highest tides can be experienced. The Steeves family has a very long history in the area going all the way back to 1766. They came to the area with other German families. Gary tells us their family name was originally Stief which became Anglicized over the years to become Steeves and that William Henry Steeves, a grandson to the original Steeve was one of the 12 Fathers of Confederation and later became a senator. It is nice to see Gary and his son Trent have preserved some of this family history. 60
