SOYBEAN AND FABA BEAN COVERAGE REVIEWED AFSC COVERAGE STRIVES TO REFLECT WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE INDUSTRY "APG did a great job advocating for pulses on the insurance side and the coverage has kept pace with price, quality, and production levels." - Jesse Cole, AFSC While there aren't any changes to insurance products for pulses on the horizon for 2018, Alberta Pulse Growers and Agriculture Financial Services Corpora on con nue to work together to ensure coverage reflects what is happening in the pulse industry. "I think the industry has evolved a lot in the last five to 10 years," said Jesse Cole, Research Analyst for Agriculture Financial Services Corpora on (AFSC). "APG did a great job advoca ng for pulses on the insurance side and the coverage has kept pace with price, quality, and produc on levels. If the quality goes up like with the (100%) food peas instead of (30%) feed peas, basically the coverage goes up because we're insuring a different end use. With APG's help, the insurance has maintained its accuracy for pulses." In 2016, field pea pricing changed from a 70/30 edible/feed end use split to reflect 100 per cent edible end use. Informa on from APG and other sources indicated that a vast majority of growers are plan ng with the goal of growing edible end use peas. To reflect the new pricing, the grade guarantee for field peas moved from a 3CAN to a 2CAN. Future opportuni es for improvement in insurance products for pulses could include regionally specific faba bean coverage and the addi on of soybeans to the annual produc on insurance program. Since 2015, soybeans have been included in the New Crops Insurance Ini a ve (NCII), which was released to cover new and small acre crops that aren't large enough or have enough background informa on for inclusion in the Annual Crop Insurance Program. 3 0
