Meanwhile, when Pulse Crop News spoke to Cole for this story last fall, most pulses were already harvested and the general harvest of Alberta crops was expected to be much be er than the previous year that saw about 25,000 unharvested pulse acres across the province compared to almost one million total unharvested crop acres. Cole said that the 2016-17 unharvested acres are now in the system. During the spring harves ng this year adjusters were processing 100 claims per day at peak mes. "It turned out a li le bit be er than we thought it was going to be," he said. "In a year like that, it looks really bad. And for some people, it is really bad. There's a lot of pain, and there are crops that are truly unharvestable and unusable. But there was a lot of canola that was graded Number One. There was a surprising amount that came off in good condi on." AFSC created a new quality category especially for that crop year that was lower quality than buyers would normally take, and accepted cash ckets from unlicensed buyers like feedlots. "We made a new grade factor that was lower than anything that would have been paid out on before," Cole explained. "There was less than we thought in that category." He said that pulses do not generally over-winter well, so the new category didn't affect the small amount of unharvested acres le out. As of this wri ng, harvest was in much be er shape than last year, but AFSC was an cipa ng making drought payments in affected areas. "We are expec ng to pay out on quite a bit of drought in the south," he said. "It's not a record year but reports are coming in of pre y low yields off the non-irrigated fields." Beans grown under irriga on, like the ones in this photograph, were protected from drought condi ons experienced by some farmers in Southern Alberta last summer.
