2017 CHOPS & CROPS MLAs, provincial government staff and industry guests enjoyed appe zers and desserts with an interna onal flair featuring locally produced commodi es at the sixth annual Chops & Crops Alberta Grown Recep on in November. Nine commissions, including Alberta Pulse Growers, highlighted the value to the Alberta economy of pulses, wheat, lamb, pork, oats, canola, potatoes, barley and sugar beets with menu items such as Black Bean and Potato Enchilada from Mexico, Dal Makhani with Garlic Naan from India, and dishes from USA, China and Japan as well. The 2017 event focused on how much of the crops, lamb and pork produced in Alberta is exported to other countries. Export numbers for Alberta pulses are not calculated separately, but Alberta producers are a major contributor to the $4.2 billion of pulse crops Canada exports each year to over 150 countries around the globe. Canada is the world's largest producer and exporter of peas and len ls. Alberta Agriculture and Forestry Minister Oneil Carlier brought gree ngs at the event. Black Bean and Potato Enchilada. APG Chair D'Arcy Hilgartner discussed issues with representa ves of government and industry. Pulse dish Dal Makhani and Pork Vindaloo with Garlic Naan. The theme combined Canada's 150th year and export. Guests took home a souvenir of the evening in the form of a cookie.
