Mohawk® uses a PET Recycling Plant to make their SmartStrand® product. That's right, plastic bottles arrive at their plant and are separated out by colour and type, both manually and by a sorting machine. The bottles are ground in to chips and then melted and extruded into fiber "fluff." That fluff is then spun into yarn, and then made into carpet. What began as waste is transformed into luxurious, soft carpet! Mohawk® has over 100 products with recycled content. They also recycle tires and rubber into door mats! To demonstrate the carpet's incredible durability, the company installed SmartStrand® carpet in a rhino enclosure at a zoo. Over a 2 week period, the carpet was 'lived on' by the 2,800 lbs of rhino. By lived on we mean soiled. By soiled we mean... 'holy cow a rhino has a large digestive tract.' At the end of the test, they cleaned the carpet and it was like brand new.
